The Power of Appreciation
By Ramadhan Karali
Life frequently focuses on criticism rather than celebration, so it’s crucial to make time to appreciate ourselves and others. In today’s world, constant comparisons and the pressure to succeed can cause us to miss the small victories, kind words, and the people who keep us grounded. Nonetheless, the practice of appreciating, acknowledging and valuing others as well as ourselves possesses great power. It energises our spirit, enhances our relationships, and reinforces our sense of worth.
Each photo I capture as a photographer is a fragment of my essence. It’s more than just an image; it’s a reflection of how I perceive beauty, struggle, and everything in between. When someone acknowledges my work, it transcends a mere compliment, becoming a validation that communicates, “Your voice, your perspective, your craft, it matters.” These moments of appreciation are lifelines on days when doubt creeps in or the creative spark fades.

That’s why I created my Affirmation Folder, Mine is called “we ni mzii”, Sheng slightly translating to “You are the One, you are Baad”, a personal archive where I keep every compliment and note of recognition. Whether it’s someone saying, “Your work inspired me,” or simply, “I love how you captured that moment,” these aren’t fleeting comments, but tangible reminders of the impact I’m making, even when I might not fully see it myself.
On days when nothing feels good enough, I return to my folder. The kind words reignite my passion and restore my belief in myself, proving that even small acts of appreciation can have a lasting effect.
Appreciation goes beyond just receiving affirmations; it involves giving them as well, by being present for others in ways that make them feel acknowledged and valued. I am lucky to have individuals in my life who consistently do this for me, whom I refer to as my Cookie Persons. Much like a freshly baked cookie, they bring warmth and sweetness, especially during challenging times. They are the friends, mentors, and loved ones who are there not only for significant moments but also for the smaller ones.
Whether it’s a late-night message to check in, words of encouragement after a difficult day, or simply standing by me when I doubt myself, my Cookie Persons remain steadfast. Their support provides a constant source of reassurance, helping me feel assured that I am on the right path, even when it’s not clear to me. The impact of being there for someone cannot be overstated. A simple, sincere “I believe in you,” or “I see how hard you’re working, and it’s inspiring” can sow a seed of confidence that grows over time. This is the ripple effect of appreciation: a small gesture that can transform someone’s day, or even their life. People flourish when they feel valued, and expressing appreciation creates a circle of encouragement that uplifts everyone involved.

Cookie Persons are those who realize that success is not solely about reaching the destination — it’s about the journey itself. They remind me that every step I take is significant, even when I falter. Having such people in your life, whether it’s a friend who always stands by you, a mentor who believes in your potential, or a family member who continually encourages you, is invaluable. When we feel appreciated and supported, our journey transforms into more than just a personal pursuit. It becomes a shared experience, enriched by those who uplift us along the way. These individuals are the pillars we rely on, their steadfast support helping us navigate life’s ups and downs with resilience and grace.
In creative fields, the journey is often marked by competition, rejection, and periods of solitude. It’s easy to fall into the habit of comparing your work to others or questioning your abilities. However, being surrounded by Cookie Persons and maintaining an Affirmation Folder serves as an anchor, keeping you connected to your purpose and sense of worth. Appreciation in creative work isn’t solely about public recognition or awards; it’s about those quiet moments when someone says, “Your work moved me.” It’s about learning to value your own progress, effort, and unique voice.
I encourage you to create your own Affirmation Folder. Gather the kind words, Thank You's, and compliments you receive, and keep them as reminders of your impact. Think about the people who support you through thick and thin, your own Cookie Persons, and express your gratitude to them. Appreciation guides us to what truly matters. By embracing gratitude for ourselves and those who support us, we lay a foundation of love and support that can help us navigate even the toughest challenges. No act of appreciation is too small to make a difference, whether it’s a kind word, a helping hand, or simply being there for someone. Appreciation has the power to propel us toward greatness, together.
